Kolkata: Soul, Sweat, and The Federation
Kolkata is cinematic gold. It looks like the 1950s in some parts and the 1850s in others. It also happens to be the friendliest city in India - maybe that's why its nickname is 'City of Joy'? But to shoot here, you must respect The Federation.
The FCTWEI (The Boss)
The Federation of Cine Technicians and Workers of Eastern India is arguably the strongest guild in the country.
-
The 19-Member Rule: This is the big one. Foreign and out-of-state productions are often mandated to hire a minimum of 19 local guild members, even if you bring your own crew.
-
Our Strategy: We don't fight it; we budget for it. We use the local crew as "shadows" or utility support. They know the city better than anyone, and their presence ensures no "local trouble" disrupts the set.
Trams & Bridges
-
Trams: Kolkata is the only Indian city with operational trams. You can charter a private tram for your shoot—it can be a neat way to get moving shots without fighting traffic. A ready made track and dolly hardwired into the city.
-
Howrah Bridge: You cannot stop traffic on the bridge (it carries 100,000+ vehicles a day). We shoot from the flower market below or a barge on the Hooghly River.
